Fibromyalgia refers to a form of rheumatism and more specifically extra-articular rheumatism as it concerns pain in the muscles and not in the joints. Sufferers of fibromyalgia suffer from widespread musculoskeletal pain as the muscles, tendons and fibrous tissues experience pain, accompanied by fatigue and sleep disturbances. Fibromyalgia pain can appear as pain, stiffness, swelling, tingling, electric sensation, burning, weakness, etc.

There is also local sensitivity in specific areas of the body.

Many people with fibromyalgia also have tension headaches (a specific type of headache), temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and depression. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by changing the way your brain processes pain signals.

Sagi, who also works at the Rheumatology Unit in Soroka, analyzed data from 367 fibromyalgia patients who were treated with medical cannabis between 2015 and 2017 in Israel and followed for six months. It would be the largest group of fibromyalgia patients in the world to be treated with medical cannabis.

The study found that after 81 months of cannabis treatment, 81.8% reported a significant improvement in symptom control, with average pain decreasing from 9.0 to 5.0 (depending on the point scale). Fibromyalgia features such as sleep disturbance, depression and weakness showed significant improvement after six months of treatment. In addition, an improvement was achieved in the patients' quality of life and daily functioning.
