What is CBG or Cannabigerol?

The cannabis plant produces about 100 cannabinoids. The best known are CBD, CBC, CBN and CBG.

Unlike CBD, which has a relatively low affinity for cannabinoid receptors and acts primarily through indirect interactions with the endocannabinoid system, CBG is believed to have direct therapeutic effects through interaction with CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain.

Research is relatively sparse on the therapeutic benefits of CBG, compared to the apparent wealth of information available on THC and CBD in the cannabis scientific community. However, there are studies linking Cannabigerol to a number of therapeutic uses, such as:

-          Treatment of glaucoma, through its vasodilators and neuroprotective effects.

-          Reduction of inflammation, as seen in animal models of inflammatory bowel disease.

-          Fighting Huntington's disease, again through its neuroprotective effects.

-          Inhibition of tumor growth in animal models of colon cancer.

-          It kills drug-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin and Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

-          It acts as a regulator of THC psychoactivity and can even relieve the feelings of paranoia that are sometimes accompanied by consuming high levels of THC.

Without intoxicating results and a huge number of possible therapeutic uses, why did CBG not become as popular as CBD?

The difficulty of producing CBG, is the reason it is in limited quantity in the market. The biggest obstacle to the realization of CBG as a common therapeutic treatment is its production cost. CBG is considered to be one of the most expensive cannabinoids produced, which has been described as "the Rolls-Royce of cannabinoids". "It takes thousands of pounds of biomass to create small amounts of CBG isolation," James Rowland, CEO of Colorado CBG Steve's Goods, told Forbes.
